The 10th Mountain Day National Convention was held in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, on August 11, 2026 — Japan’s national holiday, Mountain Day.

The National Convention has been held since Mountain Day became a national holiday in 2016, providing an annual opportunity to celebrate the blessings of Japan’s mountains and to consider how their natural environment, culture and traditions can be passed on to future generations.

Since the first National Convention, the Japan Mountain Day Foundation (Zenkoku Yamanohi Kyogikai) has played a significant role in supporting the Convention, working together with host prefectures and municipalities, concerned ministries and many organizations connected with Japan’s mountains.

This year marked the 10th Convention. Gifu Prefecture, where more than 80 percent of the land is covered by forests, hosted the event under the theme:

“Making the Most of the Blessings of the Land of Trees and Mountains, and Passing Them on to the Future.”

The commemorative ceremony in Takayama brought together people from government, local communities and organizations involved with mountains and forests. Children and young people also took part, sharing their thoughts on the future of the mountains.

The program included discussions on the future of Japan’s mountains, the traditional ringing of the Mountain Bell, a performance of the Mountain Day Song, and a Welcome Festival featuring forestry, nature experiences, mountain tourism and local culture.

Ten years after the first National Convention, the gathering in Gifu offered another opportunity to reflect on what Mountain Day means — and how the blessings of the mountains can be carried forward to the next generation.
